Ashfall may lead to water shortage

Research has been done in recent years on the ice in northwestern Vatnajökull, and the two largest layers measured 1cm thick in a 100km distance from the glacier. Experts claim this is a considerable amount, comparable to the ashlayers that were seen near Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the Grímsvatn eruption in 2011.

Video: Scientists move burning lava into a pot

Scientists at the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland are still very much at work at the lava field Holuhraun north of Vatnajökull. They have released a video which shows them transferring burning hot lava into a pot and cooling it with water.

Volcanic activity could go on for years

"There's gonna be activity here for a few years. Not this particular eruption, it'll end and another one will start up elsewhere, and this will clearly erupt in a glacier," said volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson last night.
