The Information and Development sector of the Icelandic Tourist Board contends that there are about 150 tent areas in Iceland - 68 of which do not have licenses to operate.

Elías Gíslason, the chairman of the sector, says that unlicensed tent areas are a matter of health concerns. "We have one of the best websites for camping areas in the country," he said, "and if they don't have a license, they're not listed with us." The list of tent areas in Iceland can be found at http://www.ferdamalastofa.is/displayer.asp?cat_id=511.

The sites are rated in terms of cleanliness, location and facilities. According to the site, the two best tent areas in the country are in Fossatún at Borgarnes, and Heiðarbær in Húsavík.
