Minister Makes Addition to Protected Species List

The Ministry for the Environment has added two new species to the list of environmentally protected forms of life in Iceland: the white-fronted goose and "marimo" - a rare form of spherical algae found only in Mývatn, Lake Akan-ko, Japan, and a lake in Estonia. The Ministry emphasises that hunters take care to ensure that they don't shoot white-fronted geese. Marimo, known in Icelandic as "kúluskítur," can measure up to 15cm in diameter, was first reported in Mývatn in 1970. - pfn
